OEM INTAKE ASSESSMENT
The JB74W Suzuki Jimny features a utility-focused OEM intake system, with several engineering aspects that highlight the focus of capability and durability that has become synonymous with the Jimny vehicles. These characteristics allow the OE intake components to support the meagre airflow requirements of 1.5L, naturally aspirated engine in a multitude of demanding (likely off-road) environments. However, this same focus presents several opportunities for performance improvement of the system, without hampering the quintessential capability, durability and off-road performance of the vehicle.
The OE intake filtration surface area, OE airbox design/placement and OE flexible intake plumbing were all specifically targeted by the Pipercross engineering team as areas for system airflow capability improvements. The OE intake hoses were to be redesigned to support the relocation of the air filter to the front of the vehicle, while eliminating the OE sound suppression device and increasing the cross-sectional area (and subsequent internal intake volume) of the Pipercross intake system up to the throttle body connection.
AIR FILTER
The heart of the Pipercross Jimny intake kit is the Pipercross air filter. This filter features Pipercross’ time-tested and proven air filter construction methods, to achieve the targeted airflow performance and maintain the durability required by the Jimny platform. The bespoke 3-layer Pipercross foam blend strikes the perfect balance between increased flow and air filtration, while the polyurethane cast base draws from decades of successful in-house Pipercross filter manufacturing.
Pipercross’ relocation of the air filter to the front of the Jimny’s engine bay allow a significantly larger cylindrical air filter to be used in the kit – increasing filtration surface area 62.16% over a typical OE panel filter.
HEATSHIELD
The Pipercross Jimny heatshield has been meticulously designed to take full advantage of the cylindrical air filter’s flow potential. The heatshield is tailored to the area surrounding the relocated air filter utilising the OE fresh-air feed and structuring this airflow around the Pipercross filter, while preventing engine heat from conducting into the same fresh airflow path. Similarly, the heatshield floor extends into surrounding cavities to create a barrier to the air filter, helping to prevent debris/water intrusion when the vehicle is driven in demanding applications. The two-piece heatshield design also allows for a water egress at the seams, preventing a slow buildup of water inside the heatshield and further mitigating potential water/debris issues in extreme environments. The heatshield sheets are both CNC laser cut from corrosion-resistant 2mm aluminium sheet and powder coated to blend seamlessly into the Jimny engine bay.
INTAKE HARD PIPE AND THROTTLE HOSE
The Pipercross Suzuki Jimny hard pipe and throttle inlet hose amplify the benefits of the air filter and heatshield, elevating the performance capabilities of the kit to the next level. The hard pipe is constructed of mandrel-bent, 76mm diameter aluminium pipe and powder coated for further corrosion resistance/aesthetic appeal. This 76mm pipe increases the average cross-sectional diameter of the intake system by 99.99%, maximising the performance capability of the intake system. The aluminium pipe also features an integrated mounting system (with an associated bracket) to couple the pipe to the engine, ensuring long-term durability despite engine movement. The Pipercross throttle body inlet hose features a smooth internal bore and 5-ply silicone wall construction; striking a perfect balance between durability and performance. More significantly, the inlet hose features a large, swept diameter transition from the hard pipe to the throttle inlet – structuring internal airflow inside the hose to maximise the volume of air delivered to the engine without significant destabilisation associated with other short or poorly designed transition hoses.
DETAILS
The subtle details and ancillary parts of the Pipercross Intake Kit are what elevate it beyond the competition. All Pipercross brackets are CNC laser cut from steel plate and powder coated to match; for better long-term fatigue/failure and corrosion resistance. Similarly, only stainless-steel hardware is utilized to ensure corrosion, oil and other adverse engine bay environmental factors have no effect on the Pipercross kit’s function or aesthetic – no matter how hard or where the vehicle is driven.
RESEARCH AND DEVELOPMENT
All Pipercross products are designed in-house, utilising the latest 3D-printing, 3D-scanning, CAD, CFD, airflow testing and performance testing product development technologies. The Pipercross Suzuki Jimny 1.5L kit saw several design stages/iterations, to integrate the largest air filter possible while meeting design criteria surrounding the heatshield, hoses, hard pipe assembly and the vehicle’s performance/durability aspects. Bench airflow testing was conducted on the full OEM intake system and multiple Pipercross prototype intake design iterations, using Pipercross’ in-house, custom designed and built airflow test apparatus inside a controlled environment. Performance testing of the OEM and final Pipercross intake design was completed at a third party, independent dynamometer with a 4WD Dyno Dynamics dynamometer to ensure unbiased, final performance gain data was captured.
AIRFLOW TESTING DATA
Two intake configurations were tested on Pipercross’ in-house, custom built stationary airflow test apparatus to acquire final performance data for the Pipercross kit. To develop an initial performance benchmark, first the full OE intake system (complete OE airbox, filter and intake hose). Then the entire Pipercross intake system was tested, to gauge the resulting airflow and performance increase.
The graph below summarizes the results of this testing and serves to confirm the performance benefit of the Pipercross intake kit; as the Pipercross intake yields a 78.39% maximum/77.19% average decrease in airflow restriction vs. the full OE intake setup.
PERFORMANCE TESTING DATA
As detailed above, the final configuration of the Pipercross Jimny Intake Kit was tested on an unmodified 2021 Suzuki Jimny, to acquire data on the actual performance gained by the Pipercross kits. This testing was conducted utilising a third-party, independent 4WD Dyno Dynamics dynamometer. To ensure the data captured only quantifies the performance of the Pipercross intake; only the intake systems were changed between tests. Additionally, all tests were conducted on the same day, within the same cell and the vehicle was allowed to cool between testing sets.
The data graphed shows the average of three runs for both the complete OE intake system, as well as the complete Pipercross Intake system. As the data confirms, the Pipercross intake provides considerable performance increases throughout the engine speed range. Additionally (and not clearly demonstrated solely through the data provided) is the amount of power/torque gained, relative to the engine displacement and maximum engine output – the Pipercross Intake provides a significant performance increase to a lower-powered, naturally aspirated, 1.5L engine and these gains are a testament to the performance functionality of the Pipercross kit. With maximum gains of up to +5hp & +5 lb-fts TQ and seeing an average gain throughout the rev range of +2hp & +2 lb-fts TQ. This equates to over 3% overall power increase on 1.5 NA engine.
